George Johnson's NarrativePart 1: His Father and Confederate President Jefferson Davis
Isaiah would often take a piece of Grandpa Johnson's chalk and write on the sidewalk
Isaiah Johnson (George Johnson's Father)
Confederate President Jefferson Davis
Meliza, if you can find out who ever wrote on that walk out there, I will buy you a dress
I am the son of a blacksmith
Yes, Master Jeff
Here he is Master Jeff!
Master Jeff, I learned how to write in Richmond, Virginia. A white woman learned me how to write. Before you brought me down here
You did? Write my name Ike!
Jefferson Davis
Vicksburg
Good, now write "Joe Davis"
Write "Vicksburg"
Ah ha, Ike, that's pretty nice for you. How would you like to learn with my son and two teachers?
Jefferson Davis' school educated all his slaves. The school made Isaiah a civil engineer and Isaiah Montgomery his bookkeeper. There were also farmers, carpenters, sawmills, gins and other paths available in the vocational school. All slaves on the 5 plantations that Davis owned could get a formal education. When they got free, they could take care of themselves.
