- One of the biggest troubles of international turmoil is not war, but rather terrorism. Defined as the use of violence to attempt changes in societies by striking fear and terror, it's considered an international problem because usually terrorists cross borders to commit their crimes.
- Terrorism is far from old, but in these modern times it has become an act of guns and bombs. They usually attack places where people feel safe. Crowded, mundane areas where you would least expect it. They might also target places that symbolize something that the stand against, be it a religious site or a government building.
- A new way terrorists have found to put fear into our society has been with the use of biological and chemical weapons. These involve bacteria or other gases that may result in death when inhaled. This is particularly troublesome because acquiring said weapons is not particularly hard, most labs use bacteria and other viruses in the development of new vaccines and medicine.
- In Latin America, narcoterrorism (terrorism linked to drug trafficking.) has become a big problem, especially in Colombia. The groups that control said drugs have not only resorted to violence, but also have ties with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, (FARC.)
- Drug traffic in Colombia started in the 70s, when there was a boom in marijuana farming in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta that was known as the "bonanza marimbera" which just so happened to coincide with the big demand for weed in the USA due to the countercultural movements of the time
- Drugs have not been the only motivator behind this atrocious attacks in Latin America, however. In Peru, the Shining Path, a militant Communist group founded in 1970, sought to abolish the Peruvian government to replace it with a Communist one. It's years of violence left thousands of casualties and a big dent in the national economy
