Storyboard Text

  • Gregor mendel grew up on a farm in austria, during the 1800's.
  •
  • At 21 Mendel joined a monastery that sparked his interest in science.
  • Mendel discovered that pea plants can self-pollinate
  • In self-pollination, sperm from one plant fertilizes the the eggs of the same plant. A true-breeding plant's offspring will have the same traits as the parent.
  • They canCross-Pollinate
  •
  • When Mendel crossed a purple plant and a white plant, he observed that the offspring always had purple flowers
  • First Generation Plants
  • Mendel choose to call the trait that appeared the dominant trait, and the trait that disappeared the recessive trait
  • Gregor Mendel then allowed the first-generation plants to self-pollinate
  • Second Generation plants!
  • Mendel observed that for every 3 plants with dominant traits there was 1 plant with the recessive trait

  • ratio
  • Mendel concluded that each parent gives one set of instruction, the offspring's traits are determined by the dominant set of instructions
  • Gregor Mendel was a GENIUS
  • Unfortunately scientists did not recognize Mendel's work until 30 years after his death.
