Hi!. I'm a Mexican Tetra. I can regenerate heart tissue using the cell cycle.
During a process called mitosis, cell division occurs creating 2 daughter cells identical to the parent cell.
Here are the first three steps. In interphase, the cell grows and prepares to divide. In prophase, nuclear membrane breaks down and spindle fibers form. In metaphase, sister chromatids form in the center.
In anaphase, sister chromatids are pulled apart. In telophase, spindle fibers break down and chromosomes uncoil forming chromatin while nuclear membrane forms. At cytokinesis, the cytoplasm and cell divides into two.
Although, this process could go wrong. The cell cycle could occur without control, leading to an accumulation of cells which could contain genetic errors potentially creating cancerous cells.
While the cells are born immature, a process called differentiation occurs to mature from a stem cell and take on a specialized role within the body. For example, to regenerate my heart, the cells need to work together to form heart tissue to keep my heart working properly in the form of cardiac muscle tissue.
