Storyboard Text

  • Tom, a young math enthusiast, is standing at the base of a tall tree. He wants to measure the height of the tree using the Pythagorean theorem. He measures the distance from the base of the tree to his feet and finds it to be 10 meters. He then uses a clinometer to measure the angle of elevation from his eyes to the top of the tree and finds it to be 45 degrees. He then calculates the height of the tree using the Pythagorean theorem and finds it to be approximately 14.14 meters.
  • Tom is now walking through a maze-like forest and needs to find his way out. He decides to use the sine function to determine the angle he needs to take to get out of the forest. He measures the distance he has walked and finds it to be 20 meters. He then measures the height of the trees around him and finds them to be 10 meters. Using the sine function, he calculates that the angle he needs to take to get out of the forest is approximately 30 degrees.
  • Tom is now climbing a steep mountain and needs to find the angle of elevation of the peak. He measures the horizontal distance he has climbed and finds it to be 50 meters. He then measures the height he has climbed and finds it to be 30 meters. Using the tangent function, he calculates the angle of elevation to be approximately 30 degrees.
