The Restoration, however, did not mean that the work of the English Revolution was undone . Religion became a cause of conflict between the king and parliament.

In January 1689, Parliament offered the throne to William and Mary. William and Mary agreed to a Bill of Rights that prohibited absolute monarchy and abolished the monarch's power to suspend laws.
The English Bill of Right helped create a system of government based on the rule of law and freely elected parliament. This document declares that James ll abdicated the government.
