- Harry Bulman, a reporter, had just woken up. He is very happy because his next story is gong to make him famous. In fact, he just had a dream about being interviewed. His story will be about exposing the 14 year old spy, Alex Rider.

- "That's not possible. I took the subway last night and I had about 30 dollars left on it" (67).

- Harry Bulman goes to take the bus since he is out of food. His card is declined multiple times however. As passengers get impatient, an upset Bulman grumbles he shall just walk.
- "I am sorry mate, you have got nothing left on your card" (67).

- Harry Bulman went to an ATM to retrieve money. He is already mad about the day and now the machine will not return his card! It also says he has no money in his account. When he tries another machine, he only gets the same message.
- “Are you telling me that I don’t know where I live and thatI’ve forgotten the make and the color of my own car? I’m telling you, my car has been stolen. I left it here last night, and now it’s gone" (69).

- Harry Bulman walks over to where his car is parked. When he gets there, it is stolen. He calls 911 but when he gives them the plate number, they say that the plate he gave is not matched with the car he has. Now he is absolutely furious.
- Harry Bulman has ran back to his house. He is trying to get inside when two police men show up. They ask him if it is his house and he says yes. They ask him to see what is in his briefcase and when he opens it, there is a knife covered in blood. They arrest him.

- "You have the right to remain silent" (73).
- He is taken to an interrogation room where a man who goes by the name Crawley eplains what is going to happen. He says that while he does not know an Alex Rider, if Bulman ever mentions him again to anyone, he will be killed.

- “You can go home now. You can forget all about this. But if you ever go anywhere near Alex Rider again, if you approach any newspaper editor, if you so much as mention his name, we will hear about it, and next time we won’t be so generous. We will wipe you off the face of the earth. Do you understand me?” (74-75).
