  • 13 Rangatira write to the King13 Maori chiefs, from the Bay of Islands, wrote to King William IV mainly asking for the king's protection against the French. Among this, they also wrote about the concern of the misconduct of the British subjects, inter-tribal conflict and wanted the king to defend them against lawlessness.

  • James Busby's Arrival Following the letter, James Busby was appointed as British Resident of New Zealand, which was his official title. He arrived in 1833, but he had no army of police force to support him so he used Diplomacy to achieve everything.

  • On March in 1834, at Waitangi, northern chiefs selected a flag design which became known as the United Tribes' flag. It was recognised by the British King and became the national flag for ships from NZ so they could trade outside of NZ.
  • He Whakaputanga DeclaredNorthern chiefs came together in Busby on the 28th of October 1835. He Whakaputanga o te Rangatiratanga o Nu Tirene - the Declaration of Independence of the United Tribes of New Zealand was signed by 34 northern chiefs.
  • People continued to sign until 1839. There were 52 signatures. This includes the would be first Maori king, Te Wherowhero.
