Storyboard Text

  • When the sun's heat warms up water, the water particles gain energy and turn into a gas or vapor. The water vapor rises into the atmosphere. This is called evaporation.
  • The sun is the source of the water cycle. It gives off energy in the form of heat.
  • After the water evaporates into the atmosphere, it cools down loses energy. Then, it mixes with dust, which forms clouds. This is called condensation.
  • The clouds keep gathering more water vapor until the water is too heavy to stay in the clouds and the water changed from a gas to a liquid.
  • gravity pulls the water back down to Earth in the form of rain, snow, sleet, or hail. This step is called precipitation.
  • When the precipitation comes back to the Earth, some flows down mountains or rivers as runoff and into bodies of water. This is called collection. Some water also soaks into the soil as groundwater.
  • trees and plants soak up groundwater through their roots by absorption. Then, they let off water through their leaves during transpiration.
  • Animals drink water and then it leaves their body through excretion. That water then gets evaporated, condensed, precipitated, and collected again.
  • After collection, the water evaporates again and the water cycle keeps repeating.
