Storyboard Text

  • The story takes place in Segowlee, India. A mongoose named Rikki-tikki-tavi is swept up in a flood after a big storm. He is found by a family consisting of a boy named Teddy and his parents. The family takes the mongoose home to get dry and warm. They notice that Rikki-tikki is a very curious creature that loves to explore. The family feeds him and decides to let the mongoose stay.
  • Out in the garden, Rikki-Tikki hears Darzee the tailorbird crying over the death of his baby. Rikki-Tikki asks what’s the matter, and Darzee tells him about the deadly cobra named Nag that lives in the garden. Nag appears and pretends to want a conversation with Rikki-Tikki while his wife Nagaina tries to bite him from the back. Darzee warns Rikki-Tikki in time to dodge the bite, and he was able to bite Nagaina on her back. Now he knows that there is danger in the garden that needs to be stopped.
  • Rikki-Tikki meats a small snake named karait and kills him. The family sees his act of bravery and thanks Rikki-Tikki for saving Teddy's life. That night, he meets Chuchundra the muskrat, who is very nervous and afraid of everything. As they talk, Rikki-Tikki hears the slithering of the cobras nearby. He hears Nagaina’s plan to kill the family and take over the garden as king and queen, and so that their babies are safe when they hatch. Nag hides in the bathroom and waits for the man to come in and bite him. Rikki-Tikki bites Nag above his hood, and Teddy’s dad comes out with a shotgun and shoots Nag dead. Outside, darzee celebrates Nag’s death. His wife helps Rikki-Tikki by luring Nagaina away from her nest, While Rikki-Tikki destroys her eggs. Rikki then notices that Nagaina is threatening the family at breakfast.

  • Rikki-Tikki has one of Nagaina's eggs and Rikki-Tikki tells Nagaina to fight him. They fight and Nagaina flung out at him but Rikki-Tikki jumped backwards. Then Rikki-tikki danced in a circle to get behind her, and Nagaina spun round to keep her head to his head, so that the rustle of her tail on the matting sounded like dry leaves blowing along by the wind. Nagaina came nearer and nearer to the eggs, till at last she goes, while Rikki-Tikki was catching a breath Nagaina caught the egg in her mouth, turned to the verandah steps, and flew like an arrow down the path, with Rikki-tikki behind her. Rikki-tikki knew that he must catch her, or all the trouble would begin again. Rikki-Tikki kills Nagaina.
  • Rikki-Tikki curled himself up where he was and slept till it was late in the afternoon, for he had done a hard days work. When Rikki got to the house, Teddy and Teddy’s mother (she still looked very white, for she had been fainting) and Teddy’s father came out and almost cried over him; and that night he ate all that was given him till he could eat no more, and went to bed on Teddy’s shoulder, where Teddy’s mother saw him when she came to look late at night.
  • Rikki-Tikki had the right to be proud of himself, but did not grow too proud, and he kept the garden as a mongoose should keep it, with tooth and jump and spring and bit, till never a cobra dared show its head inside the walls.
