Storyboard Text

  • Today we will be disussing alternate fuels. Currently, most of our fuel comes from fractions of crude oil but we will research other fuels such ethanol which can be used.
  • Ethanol is an alcochol which can be formed through the natural fermentation of glucose. This glucose usually comes from wheat in Australia, where its ethanol is then used as a fuel additive. This makes it renewable and better for the envornment. Its flammable nature mkes it very good for use in internal combustion petrol engines
  • Yes that is right Rakesh, however dont you think that if it was that good we would be using it entirely instead of petrol? Why do we use low quantities, and why don't we use it to replace fossil fuels?
  • Due to it's highly flammable nature, it can easily catch fire just from the heat cause by the friction between the tank and the fuel as the car is moving. Due to this, it is too dangerous to use just ethanol in cars, and so we add it to normal petrol to control this, to form either E10 or E85. Most cars are not designed to work on just ethanol either, for example they have to be modified to use E85 flex fuel due to the difference in properties of the two fuels. Using this much ethanol in the vehicle can be worse for the environment in different ways, such as the increased amount of land needed to farm more wheat for use in E85.
  • I was always so scared of using E10 in my car because I didn't know why they used ethanol in the fuel, but now I guess I'll use E10 now instead of the usual unleaded 91 because its better for the environment and a few cents cheaper. Didn't think Mr Petals class would be that useful!
