  • Franz and Albert in their room asking for supper and a carriage
  • “don’t worry about them, my friend, they’ll come all by themselves. It’s only a question of price.”(132)

  • "I think our neighbor must be either a stockbroker who made a very successful speculation or some prince traveling incognito"(136)
  • The count, Albert, and Franz all have front row views of the execution and when it’s over Franz and Albert both feel very bothered
  • "An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth"(139)
  • Franz is worried about there not being enough horses, and Albert sticks by his philosophy of money solves everything. The obsequious Signor Pastrini can only nod and do his best
  • They enter his room and it’s filled with elegance, rugs, paintings, trophies, and tapestries. The two of them are curious about this mysterious and rich Count.
  • As they wait for the execution to start, the Count expresses his views on death and revenge. As the execution begins, Albert's face becomes pallor as the prisoners are made to expiate their crimes.
