- Crisostomo Ibarra is a young Filipino who is engaged to Maria Clara, the alleged daughter and only child of the wealthy Don Santiago de los Santos, also known as Capitan Tiago.
- FALLING ACTION
- Padre Damaso grossly insults Ibarra over his father's memory during the dinner at the festivities. The young man loses control and is about to kill the friar, who is saved by Maria Clara's intervention.
- DENOUMENT
- Ibarra escapes from prison and sees Maria Clara alone on the evening when Capitan Tiago throws a ball in his Manila home to celebrate his alleged daughter's engagement. She tells him that she will marry the young Spaniard to avoid a public scandal, but that she will always be true to him.
- Ibarra escaped with Elias' assistance, but when Elias jumped in the water, the Spaniards mistook him for Ibarra and shot him. He made it to the jungle and died there.
- Basilio (who is still a child) is devastated by the death of his beloved mother Sisa. At this point, a severely injured man approaches him. The man asks Basilio to construct a pyre out of firewood. Then, place him and Sisa on it and set it on fire.
