- Evaporation it the process of water in its liquid state transferring into a gas. The main factors affecting evaporation are temperature, humidity, incoming solar radiation. Evapotranspiration is the evaporation from all water, solids, snow, ice, vegetation, and other surfaces. Transpiration is the evaporation of water through minute pores, in the leaves of plants
- Precipitation - Infiltaration
- Water vapor is the primary form of atmospheric moisture. water vapor is extremely important in forming the moisture supply for dew, frost, fog, clouds, and precipitation. As the water vapor rises, the cool air causes the water vapor to turn back into liquid water, creating clouds.
- Precipitation - Percolation
- Condensation may take place as soon as the air contains more water vapor than it can receive from a free water surface through evaporation at the prevailing temperature. Interception is the part of the rainfall that is intercepted by the earth's surface and subsequently evaporates.
- Precipitation - Throughflow
- Infiltration is a part of the water cycle and occurs when water moves into the ground from the surface and begins to soak into the root uptake to the plants, soil and rock layers underneath - slightly above the water table (the upper surface of the underground water).
- Some of the infiltrated precipitation may later percolate (the movement of water through the soil) into streams as groundwater runoff. The remainder of the percolated water flows directly as surface runoff into the sea.
- Through flow is the sporadic horizontal flow of water within the soil layer. It normally takes place when the soil is completely saturated with water. This water then flows underground until it reaches a river, lake, or ocean.
