Storyboard Text

  • THE FIRST LAW OF THERMODYNAMICS STATES THAT ENERGY IS CONSERVED, THEREFORE, THE AMOUNT OF ENERGY BEFORE WILL ALWAYS BE EQUAL TO THE AMOUNT OF ENERGY AFTER.
  • FOR EXAMPLE, A UTILITY ROOM WITH A HEATER PUMPS 450 kJ INTO A LIVING ROOM. IF THE HEATER DELIVERS 450 kJ OF HEAT, THE LIVING ROOM WILL OBTAIN 450 kJ OF HEAT AND NOTHING MORE OR LESS.
  • BUT, LET'S SAY THERE IS A TOY CAR WITH A SAIL INSIDE THE LIVING ROOM, THE WARM AIR FLOWING FROM THE HEATER PUSHES INTO THE SAIL WHICH GETS THE CAR MOVING. A FORCE IS APPLIED OVER A DISTANCE WHICH MEANS WORK IS BEING DONE ON THE CAR.
  • HENCE, THE ROOM WON'T BE WARM BY AS MUCH. WHY? BECAUSE SOME OF THE AMOUNT OF HEAT WENT INTO PUSHING THE CAR. LET'S SAY 10 kJ WENT TO PUSHING THE TOY CAR, THAT MEANS THE LIVING ROOM ONLY RECIVED 440 kJ OF HEAT AND NOT THE IDEAL 450 kJ.
