- “Slave, slave, filthy dirty slave.” Greta and Prudence chant. “Can’t even make herself presentable.” “Her hair is just awful.” “Doesn’t have a penny to her name.” “Doesn’t even have decent food. I hear she has to beg for her food and she works all the time.”
- The next night there was a huge party. Prudence and Greta were making it especially hard for the servant girl.
- Just before things got really out of hand the mistress spoke up. “I have an announcement to make!” she said on top of the noise. Everyone settled down to listen. “The servant girl is my daughter.” Everyone was shocked.
- “Works! Where is her father to do that for her.” “Her father left her when she was young and her mother is nowhere to be found.” “Ha. Imagine that being so awful your own parents do not want you.” With that Prudence and Greta left, leaving the servant girl to sit with whirling thoughts about her parents.
- “Thank-you so much for cleaning my room. That must have been a nightmare.” Prudence said.
- They made messes wherever they went and spread terrible rumors about her and her family. Finally they made a mess of the cake and deserts all over the place and blamed it on the servant girl. Everyone was too upset to work out it was not the servant girl.
- The next night there was a huge party. Prudence and Greta helped the servant girl make sure the party was splendid.
- “How? Why? I lived my whole life slaving away for you! You were not there when I needed you! You let me starve!” the servant girl stammered. “I know it was and is hard. I know it does not make sense. But I had always been close by and have never let any real damage happen. I probably should not have let my pesky nieces choose how much money you get. From this moment forward no one is allowed to treat my daughter how they had. And those who had will now be punished.”
- The mistress spoke up. “Now might be a good time to announce that the servant girl is actually my daughter.” Everyone was shocked. “How? When? Why? What?” the servant girl stammered.
- “Thank-you so much for helping with the party. If you had not been there it would have been both a mess and boring.” Greta continued. The servant girl laughed. “But that is my job.” “We are still thankful you did it.” they replied. The trio started heading off to bed.
- “You really did not have to do this guys. It was my job.” the servant girl said in a break. “We wanted to.” Greta replied. “That’s what friends do.” Prudence finished.
- “You let her live her whole life slaving away for you!” Prudence accused. “Is this how you treat your own daughter?” Greta pointed. “I know it was and is hard. I know it does not make sense. But I had always been close by and have never let any real damage happen. I let you live the life you lived so that you were not wasted on a rich life.”
