Storyboard Text

  • Gina's story had a significant impact on me as a teacher and as a person. I had never been exposed much to those with disabilities before, and seeing the process that Gina went through to help her learn and live her life was incredibly eye-opening. What stuck with me was the fact that Gina never gave up, despite always working so hard to live her best life. She needed many services and therapies, frequently moving from place to place. Sometimes even to other countries. As the presentation progressed, it was clear that she had made so much progress. I found myself cheering her on when the videos played (when she is shown trying different therapies), just as those who were there to help her encouraged her through her whole journey.
  • It warmed my heart to see that so many people cared immensely about Gina and her wellbeing. Gina had so much love and support from those around her, whether they were her family or those who helped her so she could do certain things like eat and sit up. I felt a sense of community that had formed, and it made me hopeful to know that there are wonderful people like these out there. Gina's story has also reinforced to me that just because someone has a disability, it does not mean they do not have potential. As the presentation progressed, it was clear that Gina had a lot of potential for life and her disability did not define her. She made lots of friends, had lots of fun (that skating rink story when they let her in on her wheels was my favorite), and participated in activities that people without disabilities partook in. Gina's story also reinforced my belief (as a teacher and a person) that I should remember to be compassionate to everyone. At the end of the day, everyone is an individual who deserves to be loved, understood, and cared for, whether they have disabilities or not.
  • As a teacher, I can help parents share their voice by communicating and collaborating with them. This means listening to their concerns regarding their children, valuing their input when making decisions, and asking questions so they can elaborate further.
  • I can share parents' concerns with other relevant members of the school. This could be the principal, a paraprofessional, special education teacher, guidance counselor, etc.
  • .
  • I can be present during important meetings (such as IEP team meetings) to help parents share their voice. I would give my input during those meetings to support parents and their childrens' needs.
  • ..
  • I can meet with parents at a time that is good for them. I can be flexible with meeting times with the consideration of their schedules. I would make meetings accessible to parents and make myself available to them if they need help.
