- The narrator lives with the old man and takes care of him every day. Despite the narrator's love for the old man, he becomes disturbed by the old man's strange pale blue eye. This discomfort leads the narrator to plan and carry out the old man's murder due to his growing insanity. Soon after, the police come to investigate.

- Despite not harboring any hatred toward the old man, the narrator despises his single blue eye, likening it to a "vulture eye." This antipathy drives the narrator to enact an "insane" plan to remove the eyeThe narrator battles his own sanity, trying to convince himself that he's not crazy by pretending his actions are well-thought-out. Unfortunately, this only underscores his insanity. The pale blue eye, described as having a film over it, becomes a symbol of his lack of sanity.

- For seven consecutive nights, the narrator attends to the man's needs, yet each night, he stealthily approaches the old man's room and gently opens the door. Once inside, he slowly releases the lantern's latch, casting only a narrow beam of light onto the old man's eye. Yet, every night, the dreaded "vulture's eye" remains closed. On the eighth night, the narrator repeats the ritual with increased caution. Gradually opening the door, he suppresses a silent, triumphant chuckle. Unexpectedly, the old man awakens, prompting the narrator to freeze in place. The old man utters a groan of mortal terror. After a tense pause, the narrator allows a slender ray of light to pierce through the lantern.
- Resolution
- On the eighth night...
- The light exposes the old man's vulture eye, fueling the narrator's anger. Simultaneously, the rapid and thunderous heartbeat of the old man intensifies, growing louder and faster. Fearing that the neighbor might hear the unsettling sound, the narrator swiftly resolves to end the old man's life. He drags him and topples the heavy bed, suffocating him to death. Following this grim act, the narrator "cleverly" dismembers the deceased body and conceals it beneath the floorboards in the old man's room.
- Following the narrator's concealment of the corpse beneath the floorboards and the meticulous cleaning of the blood in the room, police officers arrive at his house. The officers respond to a report from a concerned neighbor who heard a scream and suspected foul play. The narrator welcomes the officers into his home, confident that his composed and collected demeanor has successfully misled them. He goes as far as inviting the officers to relax, even sitting in the very spot in the old man's room where he had hidden the corpse.
- During their conversation, the narrator becomes aware of a faint and familiar, yet ominous, ringing sound. The noise gradually amplifies, triggering paranoia in the narrator, who starts suspecting that the police officers are privy to his misdeed. Overwhelmed by the increasing sound and the officers' seemingly "pleasant" smiles, the narrator can no longer bear the tension. Finally, he succumbs to the pressure and confesses to his crime, leading the officers to the hiding place of the corpse. He exclaims, "Villains! Dissemble no more! I admit the deed! Tear up the planks! Here, here! It is the beating of his hideous heart!"
