- In Saragossa, Spain, Charlemagne's army is fighting the Muslims. Marsilla, fearful of Charlemagne's army of Franks, offered Charlemagne his riches and promised him conversion to Christianity in exchange for the Franks' return to France.
- Charlemagne accepted his offer and Roland nominated Ganelon to go to Marsilla's court. Ganelon got mad and suspected Roland, assuming he wanted him dead.
- Since he was angry at Roland, he planned to take revenge by ambushing the rear guard of Charlemagne's army, which might be led by Roland.
- Pagans ambush them, while Christians are overwhelmed with the numbers. Olivier asked for help from Roland to blow on his oliphant but he refused because he believes that the rearguard can fight against the Pagans.
- Most of them are now dead, and that’s the time when Roland blows his oliphant so the emperor can see what happened to his men. This caused his temples to burst and his life ended.
- The Franks discovered Ganelon's betrayal and punished him. The Franks sentenced him to death and Ganelon suffered as his limb was torn apart by galloping horses.
