Storyboard Text

  • Love, Hate & Other Filters by Samira Ahmed
  • Theme
  • Theme Development #1
  • "Nothing" (1.9).
  • "Everyone is at MORP without me" (1.6).
  • "Maya, what's wrong?" (1.8).
  • Progress Check #3: Themeby Brandon Goetz
  • Theme Development #2
  • The major theme in the story is don't be afraid to be who you really are. This theme develops throughout the story as Maya makes tough decisions. However, she has to balance these between what her parents want her to do and what she wants to do. Sometimes this involves lying to her parents or even keeping things from them. People should never have to cover themselves up. Instead, they should show others all of the cool, special traits they possess.
  • Theme Development #3
  • This theme is first introduced when Maya is sad that she cannot attend MORP. She feels left out because her parents forced her to go to a friend's wedding/party. This builds tension since Maya doesn't want to be there, but her parents want her to act well and enjoy it. Violet begins to text Maya messages and pictures of the great time she is having. Just because she would rather go to MORP doesn't mean she should miss a friend's wedding in which she should go and support.
  • Thematic Solution
  • "It'll work out. I know it. I'm here if you need me. Listen to your gut. Okay?" (16.67).
  • This theme is further developed when Maya talks to her parents about attending New York University. At this point in the story, they are surprised and feel a little disrespected since their daughter kept it behind their back. After some conversation, they agree to let her attend one of the best film schools in the country. She can't wait, but soon after they decide that they don't want her to attend anymore. She really enjoys film, so being forced to go to a school of her parent's choice is not what she had in mind.
  • "I sort of also applied to NYU and got in" (11.43).
  • "Sort of?" (11.44).
  • As the story continues, Maya shared a last name with the terrorist that was originally accused. She should not be afraid of this as she wasn't related to the terrorist. Also, people should treat others equally, so when Maya said that she wasn't related to the person, it should have been completely trusted and respected. Maya and anybody else in this position should not be hurt because of something they are being accused of.
  • "Is that terrorist your uncle?" (13.42).
  • "Shut up, Brian" (13.44).
  • I think that this theme will be resolved by Maya actually attending NYU. She wants to go so badly and really enjoys film and using her camera. Her parents may not want to support her in this, but she knows how much potential for success she has in this topic. Kareem was determined that it was going to work out, and that did not just mean getting to college. It meant going to one of the best film schools in the country.
