- Dave Pelzer live with his parents and his 2 brothers in Daly City in the 1960s. Dave's father is firefighter in San Fransisco. Dave's mother is a full-time housewife. Dave's family fulfilled with love.
- I will win my mother!
- The relationship between Dave and Dave's mother is going straight down. She order Dave stand at the corner at starter. at time goes on, Dave's mother starts to calling Dave a "bad boy". One day, Dave's mother break Dave's arm and instruct him telling fall from the bed if someone ask at school.
- Mother doesn't allow Dave to practice, because Dave is being a "bad boy". later, Dave's mother putting Dave's hand on the stove and yelling for Dave for climb up the stove.
- Yes! My lunch, I can finally full my stomach.
- Dave has only allow stay in the garage, since he is not the "family" member anymore. Dave is decided to defeat mother as hard as he can, while he is hearing mother telling his brother wouldn't become a "bad boy" like Dave does.
- When the mother told Dave that he would not receive Christmas gifts, the father got some gifts for Dave, but the mother was very annoyed by his authority. Dave's father lost, he cannot help his son when his son being "punishment".
- Dave is hungry everyday, because he is not getting enough food from home. So he steal lunch from schoolmate, then he filch at the grocery stores.
- Dave do not care mother's yelling and cursing him. Drunk Dave's mother waves a knife at Dave, and she is clearly unstable. But Dave did not notice until his mother stabbed him on stomach.
- One day, Dave has been ordered to clean bathroom with a bucket of mixed ammonia and Clorox by his mother. This makes Dave hard to breathe. Dave want to revenge his mother for doing this to him, so he move as far away from the bucket as he could and left the bucket close to the bathroom door. So his mother will smell her only punishment.
- One day, Dave's mother want to change herself, she doesn't want to hurting Dave anymore. Dave is being well fed by his mother. Few days later, a social services officer shows up and having a long chat with Dave's mother, then asked Dave if he is okay living here. Dave doesn't want mother get hurt, so he said he is great.

- In Grade 5, Dave is losing his hope of life and the hope of god. His schoolmates chatting to him says, die is only answer for him in the trip on the ship.
- As Christmas getting closer, Dave's parents have more and more fights. After the holiday, Dave's father left home. He is feeling sorry for Dave, because he didn't help Dave.
- The school nurse, principle and Miss Moss called police. The police officer takes Dave and left Daly City. Dave will never get hurt by his mother, he is free.
