- Ugh, another desert, so dry and hot. It must be bad for crops here.
- Actually, growing crops is so easy here in Mesopotamia because we have rich soil. We get silt from the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers when it rains a lot.
- This place stinks, I mean other than crops there's nothing! No religion, no anything!
- Wrong again bud. In Mesopotamia we are polytheistic. That means we believe in many gods. If you look around you'll see many ziggurats which are our temples.
- What's with all these drawings?! They don't even look like art!
- Once again you're wrong. These are called cuneiforms. We invented a system of writing that uses triangular shaped symbols to stand for words, ideas, or sounds. We also divided up the hour into 60 minutes with 60 seconds in a minute. You still use that today.
- Don't you guys have kings? Who's in charge here?!
- We have priests as leaders. They help us choose leaders for battle. Some leaders stay in power after a war and become kings. Our rules created law codes which were rules to which we had to live by.
- This place is ancient. I bet they don't have good economics.
- Well our economic skills were quite good. Instead of buying or selling, we trade or barter. That is where you give someone something for exchange for another. We have a lot of major rivers, so this helps us set up city states all around them and that means we can trade in many locations.
- Well, You've definitely surprised me today with many things. I bet y'all don't have a good social structure though!
- Someone needs to teach you a lesson. Anyways our Social Structure was based on Hierarchy. That's something we developed and it's based on social class. People at the top for example were priests and wealthy merchants. At the very bottom were the slaves. You can change class if you married someone in a higher class.
