- The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street" by Rod Serling by Rod Serling, one of the main themes mankind is its own worse enemy. The topic for 'The Monsters are Due On Maple Street '' for me is “Mankind is its own worst enemy”. One reason I chose this topic is because I think that it makes sense since the story is about neighbors and people losing trust in each other and blaming each other. They felt like they had nothing to do since the power went out and everyone freaked out since it was unexpected. With everyone looking around and asking questions like : “What happened” “why has the power went out” “what will we do” and “when will it be on” ” , everyone turned into a crowd in the middle of the street, they just kept asking questions about what would happen on the street now that the power has went out, soon someone thought it would be a good idea to check the other streets to see it their power is on or off. Someone then left. Soon after someone said that they should go to the police station nearby Maple street. But soon a child said that ‘They’ don't want them to leave the street, at all. Another reason is that because of that one child every adult got suspicious of one another when someone said “HE HAS A RADIO, who are you talking to?” everyone knew that was the scapegoat so that they too wouldn't be blamed. The people on maple street even shot a person because of him moving in the darkness they just assumed that the person was an alien and shot him. Quick to shoot and kill a fellow neighbor but now you're the main scapegoat. Also, when everyone got one person dead they all looked at the child who created this by saying that someone was an alien, all attention on the child. Then everyone chased that one kid saying that he is the alien since he KNEW that would happen. Soon the whole street was chaos, pointing fingers at a neighbor and now everyone is dead. In conclusion, I think that it is right to pick “Mankind is its own worst enemy”
