Storyboard Text

  • So, this is your first day working for the body.
  • I'll show you around. After all, the mitosis we do here is a lot to take in on your own.
  • Yep! I can't wait to get started.
  • The first thing you need to know is that we only make duplicate body cells here.
  • We're not like the meiosis workers down the hall, they think they're better cause they control reproduction.
  • OK, that's easy to remember.
  • Most of your time will be in here. This is where we do interphase or just relax. Think of it as a long break, but you always have to be on call to do the real work.
  • You will also be responsible for always having a set of duplicated chromosomes ready for when you are transferred to the mitosis unit.
  • Sounds easy. The more break the better!
  • This is where the first phase of mitosis, called prophase, begins. You will make sure your chromosomes are thickening and condensing. This will prepare them for division.
  • Exactly! You also have to make sure they are all paired up with the sister chromatids you made them during interphase.
  • So all the chromosomes are still together in this phase?
  • Now we'll talk about metaphase. The nucleus gets disassembled and the chromosomes become visible. Then, you line the chromosomes up next to their sister chromatids along the middle so they can be pulled apart.
  • Your cell also begins to split its cytoplasm up into two parts.
  • I can do that easily. This job sounds like so much fun!
  • The third step is anaphase where the division of the chromosomes happens. The sister chromatids are pulled to opposite sides of the cell by spindles.
  • Your don't need to separate the cells just yet though, that happens in the next stage.
  • I hope I'm strong enough to pull the spindles apart.
