  • The relationship between Douglass and his mother was distant. Only a few times as a child his mother would take the long venture during the night to come visit him for a short period of time. She was very cautious since the separation was miles apart and there was a punishment for not being at the field by sunrise. When he got information of her passing it was years after.

  • Growing up, Douglass’s master was noted to “take great pleasure in whipping a slave” (2) His cruel actions caused the enslaved people to scream in agony and have deep wounds. Even at such a young age Frederick Douglass happened to watch the brutality of his master carving a memory into his mind.

  • When he was around seven years old he moved to Baltimore to live with Mr. and Mrs. Auld. Throughout his time living there Mrs. Auld began to teach him writing and reading. Mr. Auld despised the idea of an enslaved person to learn to read. “He would at once become unmanageable, and of no clause to his master” (4) Frederick Douglass was determined to learn and disobeyed his “masters” orders to not do so. He would carry his book and bread when he was sent out to do any errands. He would give the bread to some hungry boys that would in return give him information.
