- 1035: William, his father's only son succeeded the Duke's title.
- William I Duke of Normandy was related to the king through his great aunt, the prince's mother that would be king after his brother.
- With this bloodline and power he gained since being duke at eight and the target for many usurpers William was a strong warrior and contender for king.
- He traveled to England and the king, Edward the Confessor promised to make him his heir.
