Storyboard Text

  • tap. tap. tap
  • "Sir." "Or Madam, truly your forgiveness I implore; But the fact is I was napping, and so gently you came rapping, And so faintly you came tapping..." [line 20-22]
  • "Lenore" (line 29)!
  • "Lenore" (line 28)!
  • The poem starts one dreary night at midnight. The narrator describes the man as "weak and weary" (line 1) as he nearly fell asleep. When suddenly was awoken by "tapping at my chamber door" (line 5).
  • Next, He finally works up the courage to open the door, then realizes that no one is there. He still calls out to them because he feels as if he has just missed them. But when he opened the door no one stood before him "darkness [was] there, and nothing more" (line 24).
  • "Wretch," I cried, "thy God hath lent thee-- by these angles he hath sent thee Respite--respite and Nepenthe from thy memories or Lenore! Let me quaff this kind Nepenthe and forget this lost Lenore"(line 81-83)!
  • "Nevermore"(line 84).
  • Stood there with the door opened the narrator explained that he was standing there "wondering, fearing, doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before" (line 25-26). The silence was then broken with no one in sight, with grief following him closely he chose to answer.
  • He went back to his chamber only to hear tapping again, this time coming from the window. To ease his mind he convinced himself it was the wind. Soon after he flung open the window to find a raven that then perched above his chamber door. It "perched, and sat, and nothing more" (line 42).
  • As the raven sat there he began to ponder on the fowl's fiery eyes which were now with him forever. The air began to grow dense and felt as though the room was filling, which is when he decided to interact with the raven.
  • Finally, the raven never leaves and it traps him with a lingering reminder of the grief he has. As the light next to the raven displays its shadow on the floor he feels forever left with darkness. And as repeated before, "nevermore" (line 108)!
