- 112The old man was in a pissed mood caused by the barman but when Winston came in and started a conversation by offering to buy him a drink, the old man was already drinking and Winston knows that is easier to get answers from someone off of alcohol.
- ‘That’s right. Outside the Law Courts. It was bombed in oh, many years ago. It was a church at one time, St Clement Danes, its name was.’
- ‘I know that building. ‘It’s a ruin now. It’s in the middle of the street outside the Palace of Justice.’
- 114 Winston wasn't able to get any information from the old man about if life was better before the Revolution than it is now. Winston could have gone on and on questioning the old man but wouldn't get anywhere, he is just filled with details.
- 118When Winston was at a narrow street with a few dark little shops, interspersed among dwelling-house, his train of thought stopped abruptly and he realized he was standingoutside the junk shop where he bought his diary. Winston swore he would never come back yeah he allowed his thoughts to wander, “his feet had brought him back here and their own accord.”
- 119The older man recognized Winston immediately. A round heavy lump of glass caught Winston's eye he bought it immediately for four dollars after the old man saying "But who caresabout genuine antiques nowadays—even the few that’sleft?" After going upstairs Winston felt a connection with the room, lonely, knowing no one is watching him.
