  • Where are we going, dad?
  • This is stop 1: The Passage.
  • Stop 3: The Registry Room.
  • Most immigrants began their journey to America on foot, horseback, or train from South America.
  • In search of a better life, son.
  • Part 1.2 of immigration to the US
  • Third class passengers stayed in the steerage which used to be very dirty and crowded.
  • My name is Robert. I was a third class passenger.
  • People from Europe used to get aboard a ship in pursuit of the so-called American Dream.
  • Once you arrived, you felt something was not going as expected...
  • Stop 6: The Legal Inspection.
  • We had to go to the concession stands.
  • Stop 2: The Arrival.
  • First class and Second class passengers stayed in cabins and staterooms while third class passengers waited for a smaller ferryboat to take them to Ellis Island.
  • Children were pulled away from her parents because the guards didn't think they could belong to the parents. Some immigrants had to go through these difficult experiences.
  • Immigrants waited then their turn for processing by immigrant officials.
  • The immigrants were marked with a piece of chalk with an identifyingletter thatrepresentedif they had a disease.
  • Stop 5: The Medical Exam.Immigrants were then checked to see if they had diseases orillnesses.
  • Immigrant named John.
  • Why are you coming? Political beliefs? Any plans to support your family?
  • One by one, the passengers were called forward to speak with a uniformed inspector seated on a tall stool behind a high desk. Interpreters helped the immigrants communicate.
  • This determined whether they got to go through or not.
