The Story of the Aged Mother

- A long time ago there was a poor farmer and aged mother who lived at the foot of the mountain, in a country called “Shinano”. They owned a bit of land which supplied them with food, and they were humble, peaceful, and happy. However, they were governed by a despotic leader who ordered to put death to all aged people.
- people should abandon the aged people at the summit of Obatsayuma, the mountain of the “abandoning of age”
- The farmer who heard the governor’s decree felt sorrow in his heart.

- Just as his labour ended, he prepared food from a portion of unwhitened rice, covered it in a square cloth and knotted it in his neck along with a gourd filled with cool, sweet water.
- He then began trekking towards the summit of Obatsayuma, the mountain of the "abandoning of the aged.” During their way to the summit, the mother noticed the dangerous path, so she reached for twigs and snapped them to pieces and quietly dropped them until they reached the summit.
- This is a dangerous path. I will leave pieces of snap twigs so he will not get lost on his way home.
- The road is full of dangers so I left a trace of broken twigs to guide you on your way home. They will guide you to the familiar path farther down.
