Storyboard Text

  • Siddhartha Gautama was a prince who grew up in a huge palace surrounded by servants. Despite this, he became unsatisfied with his life believing that there was something missing.
  • Siddhartha Gautama
  • Gautama saw that the world outside his palace was full of pain, suffering, and grief. Siddhartha began to ask why this was the case.
  • Siddhartha began to believe that in order to find the truth he would have to free his mind and body from everyday concerns. He stopped washing and eating and instead devoted almost all of his time to meditation.
  • Meditation!!
  • According to legend he eventually came to a place near the Ganges River where he sat under a tree and meditated for seven weeks.
  • Buddha then spent the rest of his life wandering across northern India teaching others about his ideas.
  • Siddhartha spent another seven weeks meditating. He then described his ideas to five followers who began calling him the Buddha, "Enlightened One."
  • Buddha died around the age of 80, possibly of an illness from eating spoiled meat or other food. When he died, it is said that he told his disciples that they should follow no leader, but to "be your own light."
