- Repression is preventing forbidden or dangerous thoughts or desires from entering one's consciousness. Example: Stephanie and Tracy are eating at a restaurant together and Stephanie pushes her fear of dogs into the back of her mind hoping to not be brought back up in a chat.
- Regression
- I can not go to sleep unless I have my Dinosaur named Rex.
- Displacement is directing an emotion, such as hostility or anxiety, toward a substitute target. Example: Carl is getting upset because work is stressing him out and he takes out his anger on his pet.
- Undoing
- Butt Mom, everyone else mom lets them wear these shorts and not have a problem with them

- Projection is distancing oneself from unwanted desires or thoughts by attributing them to others. Example: Sophia blamed Audrey for being ugly thinking that she would feel better about herself.
- Rationalization
- Hey Aaliyah How do you think you did on Mr. Hawkins test today? Because I believe that I made a passing grade on my test.
- Hey Jakeria I believe that I did not do very well on Mr. Hawkins test because I only studied a little bit that night before the test and he gave us that test on purpose.
- Regression is retreating to an earlier developmental level that demands less mature responses and aspirations. Example: The girl is upset because ever since she has gotten older she still has to sleep with her favorite dinosaur named Rex.
- Undoing is attempting to right a wrong or negate an unconscious thought, impulse, or act. Example: The mother and daughter get into a heated argument about her daughter's short and then resolves the issue by having a milkshake to celebrate.

- Rationalization is explaining one's behavior by giving socially acceptable reasons unrelated to one's true motives. Example: The two girls are asking each other about how they did on Mr.Hawkins Test and Jakeria tells Jasmine that she do not think she did well because she did not study that much and blames the teacher.
