Storyboard Text

  • Wait guys! I thought pi was food, not a numerical figure!
  • Also, in 1665, Isaac Newton, an English mathematician, calculated the first 15 digits of pi. But now, we round to only 2 digits after the decimal for simplicity. Then, in the 1700's, mathematicians such as Leonhard Euler started using the Greek letter π to represent pi.
  • Well, pi is actually a very famous mathematical figure used all around the world. It was originally invented by the Archimedes of Syracuse. He did this by using geometry and ultimately figured out that pi was between 3 and 1 / 7 and 3 and 10 / 71
  • So how is pi used in modern everyday life?
  • It is used a lot now in construction, space flight, quantum physics and numerous other professions.
  • For example, this bridge we are on has semi-circles at the bottom. Engineers use pi to calculate the area and circumference of these semi-circles in order to determine the bridge stability and other essential factors to constructing a bridge, such as the amount of needed resources.
  • I understand a lot more now, but how is pi used in different cultures?
  • Pi is used in Canadian culture as an example. Like in hockey, circles are a very important part of the ice rinks.
  • On the ice, the face off dots and circles use pi to calculate the circumference of each. This enables game designers to find an amount that is the most beneficial for the game and replicate it throughout other rinks.
