- "At first, my father simply doubled over under the blows, but then he seemed to break in two like an old tree struck by lightning" (Wiesel 54). Elie's father has become a victim of Franek, and later Elie gets beat by IDEK.
- Man vs Nature
- I cant feel my lips!
- "Don't think. Don't stop. Run" (Wiesel 86). He couldn't stop, or it could cost his like. No matter how bad he wanted to stop he did't let himself fall behind.
- Man vs Society

- Elie started out with extreme faith in god, but through out the book he couldn't even imagine why he was being put through all of these experiences if God was present and real. "I was not denying his existence, but I doubted His absolute justice" (Wiesel 45).
- "I was constantly biting my lips so that they wouldn't freeze" (Wiesel 89). He was frozen from the icy cold weather.
- All the people Elie lived with didn't believe the news they were told, so everyone went along with it, just following society. 'Yes, we even doubted his resolve to exterminate us" (Wiesel 8).
