- The story begins with Alfredooverhearing a family discussion abouthis impending nuptials and thereason he hasn't married Esperanza, his fiancee for four years.
- Alfredo fell in love and discoveredwhat he was missing when he metthe innocent and naive Julia Salas.
- Esperanza had been deeply loved, but that lovehad faded. He felt as alive and relaxed as hecould be with Julia. He made an effort to confesshis feelings the night before Julia left, but thingsbetween them didn't improve.
- Esperanza and the humble Alfredo got into a debateabout their opposing viewpoints on what theyperceived to be a problem. Calixta's immoralbehavior. As a result, Esperanza hinted that shewasn't the one who had left her place or gone lookingfor someone else.
