Storyboard Text

  • The Erpal birds live on a tropical island, where it is relatively warm. The birds adapt to their environment b y lightening their feathers so they absorb less heat.
  • In order for the birds to mate, they must be the same color scheme so they can recognize each other. The birds flap their wings showing each other their matching color and they can then reproduce.
  • Then one day, a volcano on the bird's island erupted and cause the bird population to split into two differetn directions. The birds would end up on two separate islands and be forced to adapt to their surroundings. This is called geographical isolation of a population.
  • Due to the cold climate on one of the islands, natural selection occurred and the birds evolved to have darker feathers to absorb more heat.
  • On the other island, the desert climate was very hot, and the bird's feathers lightened to reflect the sunlight.
  • After many years, the birds flew back to the original island, and when they tried to mate with each other, they could no longer recognize the mating ritual which was flashing the matching colors of the wings. This is behavioral isolation. The bird species has split into two different species and has performed speciation.
