- Santiago decided to work after being robbed. He saw a merchant selling crystal glass and insisted on working for him, polishing the glass in the hopes of attracting more people in exchange for meals and enough money to buy a sheep. And as soon as he completed cleaning the glass, a huge number of clients were drawn in and purchased.
- Santiago managed to work for a month, he kept on cleaning the crystal glass then he suggested building a display case for the crystal glasses to attract more potential customers. The merchant was hesitant at first but Santiago's idea was a success and made their sales higher.
- Santiago offers to the crystal merchant that they sell tea and serve it in the crystal. Santiago's ambitions have prompted the merchant to reflect on his own unfulfilled ambitions. It was his fifth commitment in the Koran that he failed to fulfill.
- About a year later Santiago sees the Urim and Thummim stones and he decides that he wants to leave the shop and his goal of being a shepherd again and continue on his journey to find the treasure in Egypt. He joins a caravan group so that he can travel there.
- The caravan makes it to the oasis. There Santiago meets a girl named Fatima who he falls in love with.
- The camel driver gathers everyone and tell them that a breakout of tribal war keeps them from continuing their journey.
