Storyboard Text

  • Before the Haitian revolution, slaves worked in harsh conditions. In August of 1791, they gathered at a ceremony called Bois Caiman, where spiritual leaders convinced slave populations to revolt.
  • They burned plantations to the ground, and the French sent troupes, but they couldn't stop the fires, and the economy was thrown into chaos.
  • Toussaint Louverture, a free person of color, emerged as leader. Finally, in February of 1794, the French agreed to free the slaves but keep the colony. Louverture went to the French National Assembly where it became official.
  • Haiti was soon in an all out war, and because France was also fighting other wars, Spain and England sent armies to aid the slaves and weaken their French Enemies
  • Slavery Abolished!
  • In 1801, Napoleon launched the Leclerc expedition to establish a firmer French power in Haiti, and even arrested Louverture and reinstate slavery briefly in 1802.
  • Haiti rose up yet again, but this time like an army intent on true freedom. By 1803 they drove out the French, and in 1804 Haiti became a nation.
