- welcome to the hospital today we will be learning about the digestive system lets jump in and get started.
- Mouth
- Saliva contains an enzyme calledamylase which breaks down starches into sugar.
- Your teeth help grind up food into smaller pieces.
- Esophagus
- YOUR esophagus is a 20 cm long tube that connects your mouth to your stomach
- Its purpose is to close and prevent food from entering trachea (windpipe) and lungs
- Stomach
- Thestomach also releases acids and enzymes
- Your stomach is a j-shaped sack that stores and helps further breakdown of food
- The stomach physically churn the food which helps break apart the food into smaller pieces.
- Small Intestine
- The chyme enters the small intestine which is a 7 meter long tube. Also 90% of all nutrient absorption occurs in the small intestine.
- Once the food molecules are brokendown even further by various chemicals, they move across the small intestine into thebloodstream.
- Large Intestie
- The large intestine (also called colon) is a 1.5 meter long tube.
- the large intestine is to absorb water and to absorb any remaining nutrients from thefood before sending the undigested food to the rectum.
