- The old man Santiago hadn't had any luck catching a fish even when the young boy was helping him. This story took place in a small village in Cuba.

- Santiago has no friends because no one respects him and they all mock him for having bad luck.
- Falling Action
- Santiago catches a huge marlin while he is out fishing by himseslf.
- Resolution
- Santiago spends two days trying to kill and catch the marlin.
- Santiago ties the marling to the side of the boat as he sails back to shore.
- Once Santiago gets to shore he realizes the skeleton left of the marlin because sharks had eaten the meat off of the fish.
