These stairs represent life as you go 'up' in life its a metaphor the mom gives to the son. The mother gives examples of hard struggles like tacs and splinters and these are extended metaphors for hard times. Hughes gives us this deep speech to show that no matter all the hard times the mother still continues to follow her dreams for her kid. and i believe thats what langston hughes had in mind when writing the moms tacs and splinters. The mother continues to go for the landings, Hope. no matter how much the dreams are deffered there's always hope.

in martin luther kings speech he uses anaphoras like i have a dream, in 100 years, i refuse to believe. he uses these anaphoras to show how strongly he hopes and dreams for a better future, there is no lack of faith in his speech he keeps striving for his future he keeps climbing that ladder and encourages everyone to do so. the check dr king refers to implies that america doesnt reward black people and being a blank check means it has nothing for the people, there is no reward.
