Storyboard Text

  • After gaining independence from Spain, Mexcio allowed American settlers into Texas 
  • Early settlers lived peacefully and followed Mexcio's rules, but later ones did not
  • While questionable to many of the people, the war proved to be a massive success as Generals Zachary Taylor and Winfielfd Scott won a series of decisive victories, despite being vastly outnumbered
  • Tensions between the American settlers and Mexico rise until Texans revolt and delcare indpendence from Mexico in 1835
  • Folloiwng the battles at the Alamo and San Jacinto, the Texans officially gained their indpendence by forcing Mexican general Santa Anna to sign a treaty
  • Despite the treaty, Mexico does not recognize Texas as an indepndent nation, and disputes the border
  • Under President John Tyler, Texas enters the United States
  • US troops occupy the area north of the Rio Grande, and are engaged in fights with the Mexican Troops
  • President James Polk uses the skirmishes as an opprotunity to declare war on Mexcio and acqure more land in the west
  • In September 1847, General Zachary Taylor ended the fighting by leading a campaign and capturing Mexico City
  • In return for $15 million dollars, the terms included the Mexican cession of the California and New Mexico territories, as well as all of Texas including the disputed land on the border.
  • In 1848, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed, finalizing the American victory
