  • The Prioress
  • In the religious cautionary tale chalked full of hyperbole, the Prioress is a hypocritical nun who hates Jewish people.
  • (High social class due to the religious hierarchy.)

  • Let me explain. The Prioress's prologue describes her without mentioning christianity once. She dresses expensive and cares for love which as a nun she is supposed to be a bride of christ. The narrator describes her as such to convey the idea that she is not a reliable religious leader. Making her "allusion" and opinions hard to believe as true. Her tale starts with an allusion of a young boy learning a Christian song. One day he is singing it while walking past the Jewry. The Jews thought he was dishonoring their religion so they hired a murderer. A "cursed" Jew then grabbed the young boy cut his throat, and threw him into a pit where all the Jews poop. The boy's mother eventually finds her son alive, and singing even with his cut throat. When the monk joins the crowd of people he takes the kernel Mary placed from the boys tongue so he can die peacefully.

  • "The serpent Satan, our primal enemy, who has his wasp's nest in Jewish hearts, swelled with anger." (135)
  • The prioress's hate for Jewish people doesn't make sense considering during the time period Jewish people were expelled from England. Her tale is used to distract from her own corruption and greed. Chaucer uses the theme of antisemitism not only to show the "threat" Jewish people had on Christianity but, to demonstrate greedy exploitation in spirituality.
