- In Congress, in five years:
- Clerk: We will now begin deliberation on the bill to ban autonomous vehicles because of the five people they have killed since they became the only form of highway transportation
- Reasonable Rep: True, AVs have killed five people so far, but 38,000 people were saved last year now that humans no longer drive
- Anrgy Rep: But those five people WOULDN'T HAVE DIED had humans been behind the wheel!!!
- Clerk: The bill passes
- The National NewsFear Wins in CongressCongress today passed legislation banning autonomous cars because of several fatalities resulting from issues with the technology. No consideration was made of the source of the issues or the potential superiority of the technology to human drivers. The rare but significant and fatal failures of AVs have returned us to the similarly significant fail rate of human drivers. Public outcry against the robots outweighed outcry against the issues with humans. The ethical debate remains: is it acceptable for Autonomous Vehicles to kill people if human drivers would have killed more people?
