- Peter the Great ascended to the Russian throne after his brother, Ivan V dies in 1696. Unlike leaders before him, Peter the Great increased the power of the state which abolished checks and balances.
- Tsar News: 1682God appoints PTG!
- Peter went to war with Sweden which lasted 21 years. This ended with the treaty of Nystad, which shifted the power of Sweden to Russia.
- Tsar News: 1705PTG militarizes the rich!
- After he won against the Swedens, he built St Peterburg on a swamp, a project that thousands of his people died for. This demonstrated the power he had among the people which showed off his political sovereignty.
- Tsar News: 1721PTG restrains the Russian Orthodox Church!
- Peter believed that his right to the rule of Russia was divine, that God had given them that right. By believing he was chosen by God to lead the people, it gave him authority to rule over the developing country of Russia.
- Peter forces his nobles to serve in the military or the state government by conscripting them to ensure they wouldn't detract from his power. This limited the nobility's power so that they couldn't limit the tsar's power, making the checks and balances to the king's power nonexistent.
- Peter the Great limited the Orthodox church's power by placing a representative obedient to him alone at its head. This gave Peter a controlling interest in the church and removed the power to check and balance the tsar's power.
