Storyboard Text

  • Rising Action: The rising action develops the conflict in the story. The narrarator checks on the old man's eye for seven nights and sees that its always closed. "Every morning I went boldly into his room and asked him how he had spent the night. So, you see, he would have been very clever to suspect that every night at midnight, I looked in on him as he slept."
  • This I did for seven nights. But the eye was always closed.
  • Climax: The climax is also known as the "turning point" of the story. The narrator, on the 8th night, sees the old mans eye after waking up and suffocates him under his own bed. "Finally it stopped. The old man was dead. I removed the bed and looked at the body. Yes, he was stone dead."
  • "He screamed once - once only. I dragged him to the floor and pulled the heavy bed over him."
  • Resolution: The resolution is where the story wraps up. The narrator invites the police into the room and sits right over the old man's buried body. But then, he hears the old man's heartbeat again, louder and louder. Eventually, he breaks and confesses to the crime. "Anything was better than this agony. I could no longer bear the torture of their smiles. I felt that I must scream - or die. The noise was louder - louder - louder!"
  • "Villains! Enough! I admit the deed! Tear up the planks! Here, here! It is the beating of his hideous heart!"
