  • A mom of two deaf girls desperately needed a way to teach her kids about their religion. After their 1st tutor died, the mom sends them toAbbe de L’Epee, a French Catholic priest who helps teach them.

  • As the girls got older, they learned how to communicate many topics using sign language and were happy. After teaching them for years and seeing their success, L'Epee fully dedicated his life to educating the deaf.

  • In 1771, Abbe Charles Michel de L’Epee established the first free public deaf school in Paris. He went on to open 21 more schools for the deaf in his life. He is known as the "Father of the Deaf".

  • L'Epee died in 1789 but the schools continued educating deaf children for decades. Children from all over France came to his school(s) to be educated and accepted. The signs he used were call Old French Signs and became part of standard sign language.
