  • You can't do this! I will give you more taxes you know!
  • Lets head to the jail to free debters! That will mean more people to join our fight!
  • After/Impact
  • We must give more power to the federal government.
  • But how?
  • WellI do have a few ideas.....
  • Poor farmers could not pay taxes in Western Massachusetts and their land was being seized so they were super angry. They had secret meetings, just like in the revolutionary war to decide what to do. Daniel Shays, a former revolutionary war captain, decided to lead a rebellion to end the taxes, and free imprisoned debters.
  • Shays decided to use tactics similar to the revolutionary war by breaking prisoners out of prison and closing courthouses to stop the arrestings of people in debt. He had about 1,200 farmers with him as he tried to seize control over the arsenal to get more firepower. However, the governor sent over 4,000 volunteers under the control of general Benjamin Lincoln to stop them. Lincoln killed four farmers in the battle while the rest scattered. The next day, Lincoln ended Shays rebellion.
  • In the aftermath of Shays rebellion and many others, the Annapolis convention was held. This convention was there to discuss ways to give the federal government more power. Delegates from the states New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Virginia. Delegates from the states New Hampshire, Massachusetts, North Carolina, and Rhode Island wanted to come but, they were late to the meeting.
