- On June 27th people are gathering for their annual lottery. The children assembled first and the boys collected their stones. Finally the parents came to watch over their children. Mr. Summers was in charge of the box that contained the lottery. The night before, he made the slips of paper and put them in the box.
- Stoning
- Once everyone picked out the slips of paper Tessie Hutchinson notices that her husbands paper had something on it. She starts to yell that "it isn't fair." And continued to say that her husband did not have enough time to pick out his paper. For this reason, Mr. Summers decided to put 5 pieces of paper. The Hutchinson's had to all get a slip of paper.
- After all the Hutchinson's picked their pieces of paper from the box, everyones papers was blank. Except Tessie Hutchinson. Her paper had a dark circle drawn on it. Bill Hutchinson grabbed her paper out of her hand so everyone can see it had the drawn circle on it.
- Tessie was in shock, she didn't think it was fair and that it was right. The people started picking up rocks of different sizes. Mrs. Delacroix grabbed the biggest rock in the pile while Ms. Dunbar only got two small stones. Her children had rocks in their hand as well. Tessie was in the center of the space. As Tessie screams and yells a rock hits her on the side of her head.
