As of now, there has been much improved equality between men and women in the workplace, although many jobs still don't offer equal pay for men and women. But, in the household the responsibility to tend to children, clean, cook, etc, is still largely placed under the responsibilities of the women. And men still many times have authority over women even today in certain households which is similar to the relationship between Othello and Desdemona. It is referred to many times in Othello, that the woman's place is in the house while the man is obligated to collect revenue to survive on, and it has also been shown in Desdemona's and Othello's relationship that the man has authority over the woman, and is able to bend her to do his bidding.
